Wedding season is here and deciding what to wear isn't the only stress for guests before attending a wedding.
Figuring out what to give the happy couple, a decision that involves a variety of factors (How much money to spend? How well do you know them?) is one big deal to settle before the ceremony.
Wedding gifts originated from the
notion of a bride price or dowry that was paid to the groom's family. It
usually included land, animals, money, and other forms of historical wealth.
The basic principle underlying the gifts was that the couple (specially bride)
would be financially secure.
The wedding
gift craze as we know it, however, really began in 1928. That’s the year that
retail giant Macy’s had the brilliant marketing idea of introducing the wedding
gift registry, where guests weren't expected to bring
anything to the table.
In the current era of gift giving,
guests are more apt to go off registry to get something more personal, or skip
the presents altogether and just gift money. Instead, modern couples are
finding creative ways to celebrate their day, including setting up charity
donations or just asking for cash (politely, of course J).
Of course, “the symbolism is
perhaps a little different- now the gifts are expressions of love and don’t
necessarily provide financial security in the event of widowhood.”
So this is how wedding gifting
evolved throughout history.
